The history of an organization is the history of its spirit and endeavor. So too is it with University Women’s Association (UWA) Pune.
The University Women’s Association (UWA) Pune, was established in 1949,by prominent women from Pune Ms. Shantabai Bhandarkar, our Founder Member, Ms Sane and Ms Khan, as ‘Women Graduates’ Union’, a voluntary organization that strove to educate and empower women from the disadvantaged classes.
In the year 2010, Ms. Shantabai Bhandarkar, turned 100 years. As a pleasant coincidence this year was also the Diamond Jubilee year of UWAP. Ms Bhandarkar was associated with Women Graduates’ Union, since 1977, and rose from becoming a Managing Committee member to President. She was a member of Bombay State Social Welfare from 1955 to 1957, and also of the Women’s Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Community Development in Delhi.
The UWA, Pune, is an affiliate of Indian Federation of University Women’s Associations-IFUWA, founded in 1920. IFUWA is affiliated to the Graduate Women International (GWI) founded in 1919 as International Federation of University Women (IFUW).
